One of the first steps to learning any language, even the Chinese language, is the pronunciation. It is very important to pay attention to the tones that would distinguish it from the other languages and to pay attention to the letters, the finals, the initials and other factors that make up the Chinese language. All students must remember that the correct
pronounciation will matter a lot and it would not do good to the learning if the bad habits are not corrected.
1. Listen to all forms of media that use the Chinese language.
Listen to the radio and Chinese music, listen to how the newscasters speak when they read the news in Chinese. This will augment whatever learning is made inside the classroom.
2. Practice will always make perfect, no matter the skill that is being learned.
Take the initiative and keep practicing saying the Chinese words out loud. Listen to how it should be pronounced properly and imitate that sound.
3. Pay attention to the tones.
The Chinese language, no matter the dialect, is tonal. There are peaks, flows, rising, falling and other wave sounds. Many English or American speaking individuals may laugh at how musical the language is spoken by the natives but they do not realize that different tones will change the whole meaning behind the words spoken.
4. When listening to music, try to pay attention to the words being sung.
The singers usually are the best ones to rely on to the different tones of each word spoken. Listen and learn from Chinese songs.
5. Make use of the dictionary.
When everything else fails or there is doubt as to how a word should be spoken, rely on the dictionary for these have the phonetic spelling of the words that can make it easier to pronounce a word properly.
6. Check out the different software
available.
There are many software that can teach any language, even the Chinese language of choice. There should be interactive software as well that will allow the student to answer the prompts made by the virtual teachers. This will also help students choose the right word in a sentence.
